April 2026 Intelligence Project Dispatch: Trends and incidents of the hard right

The Southern Poverty Law Center works to dismantle white supremacy in public forums and online, exposes hate and anti-democracy extremism and counters disinformation and conspiracy theories with research and community resources. The Intelligence Project monitors and exposes white supremacy and its impact on communities.

Anti-democracy efforts

  • Noted election deniers submitted a to President Trump titled 鈥淓stablishing Security, Integrity, and Transparency for United States Elections With Protections Against Foreign Interference.鈥 It calls for the president to declare a national emergency based on a conspiratorial claim that China interfered in the U.S. 2020 elections. The order would give the president , including the ability to end mail-in voting, ban voting machines, and enforce hand count of all ballots. Peter Ticktin, who represents imprisoned election denier Tina Peters, drafted the measure. While drafting it, Ticktin election deniers including Mike Lindell, Michael Flynn and .
  • In late March, a Wisconsin jury convicted election denier of one felony count of identity theft and two misdemeanor counts of election fraud. In 2022, he used a state-run website to request ballots in the names of various political figures in the state; asked that the ballots be sent to his home; and publicized what he had done. Hard-right allies celebrated Wait鈥檚 efforts after his conviction. Noted election denier David Clements described Wait as 鈥渁nother patriot doing what was right to fight election corruption.鈥1 HOT Government, an election denier group that Wait worked with, thanked him for 鈥渉aving the courage to act when others chose to stay silent.鈥2 Wait faces a maximum penalty of seven years in prison.

Tech and extremism

  • On March 25, a New Mexico jury found Meta 鈥渒nowingly harmed children鈥檚 mental health and concealed what it knew about child sexual exploitation on its social media platforms.鈥3 This verdict opens up the possibility for renewed efforts to compel social media platforms to take action over their content, at least on a state level. In recent years there has been little chance of action on the federal level to compel social media platforms to police their content. The New Mexico decision offers the potential for action on the state level.

Anti-immigrant activity

  • On March 18, Matt O鈥橞rien, deputy executive director for the hate group Federation for Immigration Reform (FAIR), testified at a on 鈥淚mmigration Policy by Court Order: The Adverse Effects of Plyler v. Doe,鈥 organized by the House Judiciary Subcommittee on the Constitution and Limited Government. During his remarks, O鈥橞rien was critical of the landmark 1982 Supreme Court decision that ruled states cannot deny a child an education regardless of immigration status. FAIR has long advocated overturning Plyler v. Doe as part of its anti-immigrant agenda.4

Anti-Muslim activity

  • Americans Against Islamification (AAI), an Islamophobic protest organization co-founded by Jayden Scott and Jake Lang, announced plans to run a candidate for the U.S. Senate in Michigan, offering to pay canvassers to gather signatures to get the candidate on the ballot.5 The initiative is a shift from AAI’s past activity, which under Lang focused on to instigate conflicts with counterprotesters.6 AAI appears to be changing its strategy following the removal of Lang for an individual he believed to be a 15-year-old girl.7
  • After being welcomed by the State Department in February, British anti-Muslim activist Tommy Robinson spent time with members of the U.S. House Sharia-Free America Caucus on March 19, according to a post on X from Rep. Keith Self.8 According to the British anti-extremist group Hope Not Hate, Robinson (whose real name is Stephen Yaxley-Lennon) is 鈥渢he best-known far-right extremist in Britain,鈥 who has spent more than a decade leading anti-immigrant and anti-Muslim street movements.9

Militia and antigovernment movement activity

  • In mid-March, 鈥溾 which focused on Second Amendment absolutism and opposing gun control measures awaiting the governor鈥檚 signature, took place outside the state capitol in Richmond, Virginia. , who operates Liberty or Death Freedom Apparel, the event attracted militias, including the Virginia Kekoas.10 Attendees lamented that turnout was low compared to similar past rallies.11
  • Constitutional sheriffs failed to stop legislation in Washington state that will make it easier to remove a sheriff from office if the determines they are unfit for the job. The bill passed both chambers of the Washington Legislature and is awaiting the governor鈥檚 signature. The Constitutional Sheriffs and Peace Officers Association rallied opposition to the bill, claiming it threatened “self-government, local control, and public accountability 鈥 foundations of American liberty.鈥12 A found that 75% of respondents supported the bill.
  • West Virginia U.S. Rep. Riley Moore called Texas state legislator James Talarico “demonic.” Talarico is running for the U.S. Senate in Texas. Moore is quoted in a saying, 鈥淚 think he is demonic. 鈥 And I think we need to keep an eye on that and watchful eye because there are other forces of work in my view.鈥 Calling political opponents demons has increased in recent years, as Christian supremacist views have become more common in mainstream political spaces.
  • Media Matters posted to YouTube by anti-student inclusion group PragerU over the past two years. A key focus of the review included PragerU Kids content, noting the Trump administration鈥檚 to replace the void left by the defunding of PBS. Media Matters found that newer videos contained content attacking post-apartheid efforts in South Africa; suggesting that prejudice was a thing of the past; teaching children about the harms of DEI; and downplaying colonialism and American slavery.
  • Anti-student inclusion group Defending Education with the U.S. Department of Education鈥檚 Office for Civil Rights. It asks for an investigation into a Stanford University training course for teachers who are Black, Latinx or Native American, arguing that it violates the civil rights of white and Asian teachers.
  • Jake Lang is attempting to rebuild his legitimacy after being with someone he assumed was a 15-year-old girl. Lang defended his actions, arguing 鈥渃onquerors鈥 are always 鈥渓ooking for a young woman to have children with.鈥13 He called the sting that caught him a 鈥渨hite fertility humiliation ritual.鈥14 When the texting came to light, it prompted wide condemnation of Lang from partners, including Jayden Scott. Scott declared Lang was indefinitely suspended from The Crusaders, a group they had been running, and Scott was taking over as the interim leader.15 Despite Scott鈥檚 declaration, Lang has continued to promote the group on his social media.16

Anti-人兽性交+ movement

  • An effort by the Bowyer Research firm to review Disney鈥檚 corporate philanthropy policies failed 17shareholders voted down the firm鈥檚 proposal to the anti-人兽性交+ hate group Alliance Defending Freedom‘s Viewpoint Diversity Score program. Bowyer Research representative Dana Tuggle told shareholders the purpose of the resolution was to uncover bias against two hate and antigovernment groups. 鈥淲e want to know, for example, whether Disney favors groups such as the Human Rights Campaign that subjects conservative organizations like Turning Point USA and Family Research Council to extra scrutiny to be eligible for charitable matching,鈥 she said.

Conspiracy propagandists activity

  • The incarceration of election denier Tina Peters by the state of Colorado has continued to gain attention since President Trump announced he wanted to even though a president individuals convicted of state crimes. Trump鈥檚 response has been for the state鈥檚 refusal, thus far, to comply with what he wants. Colorado Governor Jared Polis has made statements for Peters, strong enough to cause , the Republican Mesa County district attorney who prosecuted Peters, and to publicly oppose the idea.
  • In late March, was taken into custody by police in Pittston, Pennsylvania, after resisting arrest while claiming to be a sovereign citizen. Police were called after McCoy sent a video to his ex-girlfriend from inside her residence threatening to set a mattress on fire to burn the building down. His ex-girlfriend told law enforcement that he was acting erratic and claiming to be the 鈥渃hosen one.鈥

White nationalist and neo-Nazi movement activity

  • In March, the College Republicans of America (CRA) announced they appointed Kai Schwemmer, a longtime fan of pro-Hitler streamer Nick Fuentes, to be their new political director. Schwemmer, who streamed his video on Fuentes鈥 website Cozy.tv under the name 鈥淜ai Clips,鈥 appeared in a documentary from 2021 that Fuentes released and defended the streamer in deleted tweets. Promotional material from Fuentes鈥 2022 America First Political Action Conference (AFPAC) listed 鈥淜ai Clips鈥 as a 鈥渟pecial guest,鈥 along with prominent white nationalists Jared Taylor and Peter Brimelow.18 CRA has upwards of 280 chapters throughout the country and describes its goal as 鈥渢o aid the GOP in cultivating the next generation of Republican activists, staffers, and leaders.鈥 In response to pushback to Schwemmer鈥檚 appointment, he said on X, the website formerly known as Twitter, that 鈥淚鈥檓 not a groyper; I am simply and unapologetically an American nationalist.鈥19 Fuentes and his fans call themselves 鈥済roypers,鈥 refering to a far-right meme based on a cartoon of a giant toad.

Male supremacist activity

  • A man in Montana is accused of planning to murder an abortion doctor, allegedly breaking into the doctor鈥檚 yard with a gun before changing his mind due to 鈥渃owardice, mercy or something greater,鈥 as he told police. The man, Charles Felix Jones, also told police he shot into a Helena Planned Parenthood clinic in 2023.20 The antiabortion movement has carried out extreme acts of violence against abortion providers and clinics for decades. Since 1993, antiabortion activists have murdered 11 people.21
  • Myron Gaines spoke22 at the University of Florida as part of his Toxic Masculinity Tour, sponsored by Uncensored America (UA). UA is a far-right campus organization known for bringing speakers who promote white nationalism, antisemitism, male supremacy and other forms of bigotry to college campuses with active chapters. Gaines also promoted his new book, Why Women Deserve Even Less, which was briefly ranked by Amazon as one of the best-selling books on feminist theory.

Confederate monuments

  • In March, community members in Hot Springs, Arkansas. Phyllis Beard, a city director, and Steve Arrison, CEO of Visit Hot Springs, demanded the statue be relocated because it is 鈥渁bhorrent鈥 and 鈥渃reates a negative first impression,鈥 and because it stands in the spot where two Black men where lynched in the 1930s. The United Daughters of the Confederacy in Hot Springs are advocating to keep the memorial where it is, arguing that the lynchings in question actually took place in a different location.
  • In early March, the North Carolina Court of Appeals in Gaston County. The NAACP argued that the presence of a Confederate memorial in front of a courthouse violated the equal protection clause, as it was designed to send a message to Black Americans that justice in the United States is for whites only. Protests against the memorial began in 2020, and in that year the Gaston County Commissioners voted to remove it. However, North Carolina鈥檚 made it so that only the courts could decide to remove the memorial. After the court of appeals decision, demonstrations against the memorial .
  • The Georgia General Assembly after opposition efforts were led by the 人兽性交 and other civil rights organizations. The bill would have created a 90-day period before an intended removal of a Confederate memorial, during which any group or individual could stall or halt the removal by filing a suit or petition against it. The bill failed with universal opposition from Democrats and a few Republicans.
